Falling Back in Love With Tucson

I was born and raised in Tucson, and like many of my friends who moved away in their twenties, I was drawn back to this charming, quirky city to set down roots again.

Having dear friends and family here (and more affordable housing!) solidified my decision to return from Los Angeles, but there was more to it than that. Tucson has many of the qualities of a larger city — a stellar restaurant scene, gorgeous scenery, and an excellent university — and yet it still somehow maintains the charm of a smaller place.

Summer days may be scorching hot, but the awe-inspiring sunsets and powerful monsoon storms make it worth it. Cool winters, gorgeous mountains and wildlife, and the most stunning skies in the world are just a few of the reasons why I love living here.

I also appreciate how down to earth Tucsonans are. People from all walks of life call this city home, from artists and professors, to outdoor enthusiasts, retirees, and everyone in between. It’s a melting pot scattered with murals, unique architecture, James Beard award-winning restaurants, local breweries, and over 100-miles of trails for cyclists.

But while Tucson is stunning, it’s a little ugly too. We have some of the most beautiful desert you’ll ever see, but Time Magazine didn’t name Speedway Blvd. the ugliest street in America in the 70’s for no reason. What some folks deem “ugly” is actually what I think makes this city so cool — our eclectic strip malls, Googie architecture, retro signs, and industrial side — but that does mean that it’s not for everyone. If you’re looking for never-ending grass lawns and palm tree lined streets, you’re in the wrong city and should probably consider living somewhere in metro Phoenix.

As someone who grew up here, moving away was important. I got to fall in love with another city, discover myself more, and learn skills I may not have otherwise. Going away was a part of my “coming of age,” but returning on my own terms was too. I got to choose to call Tucson home, and I’m so happy I did.
